Bracken Fern - botanical illustration 1812

A fern is a term referring to about 12,000 species. They are the most ancient vascular plants; lacking flowers and seed, but instead reproducing via spores. Most cultivated ferns are valued for their ability to grow in shade, and also for their edible fiddleheads, a delicacy in many cusines.
